It’s Time to FLIP the SWITCH!
Hey Mom,
When I woke this morning, my wife was already out of bed. It was early and I assumed she was exercising. I got out of bed, walked out of our room and found my wife sitting in the dark, phone in hand, and wrapped in a blanket.
“Babe, what are you doing?” I asked.
“Do you realize that Thanksgiving is NEXT week?” she said flatly. I am very familiar with the overwhelmed tone I heard in her voice.
How does it swing around so quickly? It seems like it was only a few weeks ago that we packed AWAY the Christmas decorations, and this morning my children were stringing popcorn to use as garland on the tree.
I’m guessing that because you’re a MOM…that you’re feeling a little overwhelmed as well. Can I encourage you to stop…inhale deeply….hold it…now exhale slowly? Now repeat after me, “It’s going to be all right.” Do it again.
Here’s the deal, Mom. The feelings you feel are magnified because you’re trying to do it ALL. You can’t do it all. No one can. So instead of trying to get everything else done AND get ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas, flip the switch and go into Holiday School Mode.
That doesn’t have to mean you don’t do any school…it just means you do school differently for the next…little while. Use all that ‘stuff’ you need to get done AS part of your school. So for my wife, it might mean making, baking, or shipping something as part of school. She’ll still do some subjects and have the kids do the parts of school they can do on their own, but she’ll skip some of the less important parts…because she can‘t do it all!
Holiday School, is NOT just ’survival mode school,’ it’s more focused, intentional, life-impacting, and FUN than plain, old, normal school. Your children learn more about life, flexibility, and what really matters, plus you get stuff done and everyone smiles more.
So go ahead and flip the switch now if you need to…and get your holiday school on.
